Not a Review-A Story Instead.
My brother & I had been "out of the loop" so to speak. We had
both moved to S Carolina from Atlanta & was helping our parents
build a house there. Anyway, we had seen plenty of Dead shows
on the East coast but was itching to see some West coast shows. So we figured...if we are going to do it, might as well do it right! Right? So we got tickets for these shows. Chinese New Year Feb 22, 23 & 24. And we used the $ from our income taxes
to rent a car for a week with unlimited mileage. We rented the car in Greenville, SC drove to a friends in Atlanta picked up a half sheet of fireworks & hit the road for San Francisco! It took us 52 hours to get there. However we did go a couple hours out of the way to see the Grand Canyon on the way. We had brought a tent & camping equip cuz we didn't have $ for a hotel. So, we got to
S P Taylor State Park at 2am & pitched the tent in the pouring down rain. Woke up the next morning to find that someone had broken into the rental car & stolen all of our stuff, including our tickets! Including an "Infrared Roses" cd with a half sheet of "fireworks" hidden inside. Including all of our Live/Dead tapes, all of the cd's that we owned at the time & my 2x cassette/CD boom box. They even stole my brothers tennis shoes. They also stole 2 gas credit cards that we had planned on using to get home & I had $50 cash in my pocket. It had taken $110 in gas to get there. I called my Mom, knowing she had no $ to send but hoping for advice. She said, "Well your cousin Eddie lives in Dallas. Make for Dallas & I'll try to get ahold of him." When we met up with him I had 50 cents left & my gas light was on. He had a big bottle of Jose Cuervo & a big bag of weed!! Which was much needed after such a heartbreak!!! Anyway, on Friday my Mom went & got my paycheck & wired me $ to get home. The very next Dead shows were at the Omni. And , of course, THE FIRST TIME I EVER GOT TO HERE "LONG, LONG WAY TO GO HOME"!!!!! Well that's my story & I'm sticking to it. Never got to see a West Coast Dead show. After that I never tried again. However, '94 I was able to make 14 in a row.
And after buying tickets & driving all the way across the country to see these shows and NOT getting to see them. It is very nice to finally be able to hear what I missed. Thanks to all who made these shows available!!! Lots of love & appreciation to all!
